Traveling Traveling

So we're leaving in less than 48 hours for a wonderful 10 hour drive to Asheville North Carolina. Because when isn't 10 hours in the car with two young children wonderful? We're doing the trip down in two shifts so it shouldn't be too bad, but driving back in one shot on Sunday after a long weekend with most likely not alot of sleep should be just lovely.

It's been awhile since we've taken a trip this long. Hmm....I think it was the last time we drove to NC over three years ago. Any tips or ideas for making the trip more manageable for the kids would be oh-so-greatly appreciated!!! And quickly please - like I said we have less than 48 hours before departure!

Also today I realized that I have no books lined up for the trip. That goes to prove how busy things have been because typically I would have checked books out of the library in advance and had at least three or four lined up. At LEAST three or four. And at the moment I have none. Not one. When I told Matt of this potential disaster he rattled off the titles or two or three books he's been wanting me to read. My response is a long car trip with kids is not the time for me to explore deep theological issues - I need stories and characters and plot. So....as well as traveling tips with kids I would love some book recommendations. PRONTO!!! If you're wavering between travel tips for kids or book recommendations - go with book recommendations! Both would be great though....

Just so you know my husband likes to drive and gets carsick when anyone else drives. And he doesn't really enjoy mindless chatter while driving. So unless I'm going to be sitting in the way back watching Dora with the kids (please no! it will be hard enough just listening to it) I need something to entertain me, therefore my need for books is justified!.

Hopefully I'll have some entertaining stories to share when we get home!

Megan, I have lots of book suggestions: Have you read The Other Boleyn Girl by Phillipa Gregory? Loved it. She also has a few others. I read the Virgin's Lover but haven't read The Constant Princess or The Queen's Fool yet. I liked the plot and interesting facts about the kings and queens of England. Also, one of my favorite authors is Gillian Bradshaw - she also writes historical fiction. My favorite was the Beacon at Alexandria, but Imperial Purple, The Bearkeepers Daughter, Cleopatra's Heir, and The Sand Reckoner were all fantastic as well. I also like Randy Alcorn (christian fiction) and my favorite by him was Safely Home. Deadline, Dominion, and Destruction are 3 that go together and were good but heavy reading. Or light Christian Fiction Love stories I say go for Lori Wick - the Kensington Chronicles was my favorite series. If you need more then just let me know!

Hey Megs,
What's going on in Asheville? No recommendations from me. I haven't read a new book in ages. And no suggestions for travel tips... N.'s not as old as your girls and we haven't gone that far either. Lots of help I am.
Good luck.

Hmmmm...books...I really love Anne LaMott for easy, entertaining reads as well as interesting spiritual positions, but I know she's not for everyone. I'm also into buying kids books on history, art, science, that sort of thing (more at my level!). I love a good factoid! And if you haven't read The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls...run, don't walk, to get it! I also enjoyed No Touch Monkey by Ann Halliday which is a collection of crazy travel stories. Good stuff.

As far as traveling with kids...wow, no idea. An arsenal of cartoons is all I can think of!

And thank you SO MUCH for visiting our blog! I have to confess that I've been a closet Day with the Demo visitor!!! It's so fun to see what the GCC friends are up to...I can't believe that the college kid formerly known as Megan Koerber is 30! Happy Birthday, you young thing!

Your children are beautiful, Megan, such spunk, such sparkle! Frankly it seems as though you and Matt are surrounded by beautiful people! Your family and friends look so happy and fun and you and Matt look fantastic. It's really great to check in and see what's going on with you guys.

Have a GREAT and SAFE trip!
